Team SICAL: Situated Interaction, Collaboration, Adaptation and Learning
Coordinator : Elise Lavoué | Assistant coordinator : Audrey Serna | Team presentation document (PDF) |
The SICAL team develops novel approaches, models and tools to improve humans' ability to interact, learn and adapt, especially in collaborative environments. Our research tackles the following themes :
- learning environments, particularly serious games, that support scripting and regulation in collaborative activities, with the goal of improving learners engagement and the involvement of the various actors within training situations.
- tools and models supporting design, prototyping and evaluation of interactive systems. We are especially focusing on post WIMP interaction (gestural, multimodal, mobile), with the goal of making such processes more efficient and better adapted to the context of use.
- adaptable and adaptive systems that enable the analysis of users' behavior based on traces of interaction. We propose adaptation methods, especially for assisting people with disabilities.
We consider interaction as a socio-technical phenomena in which people and systems co-evolve. Based on this premise, we study interaction in context, and the tools we design are studied in situation. Our goal is to understand emerging use patterns and appropriation dynamics of novel learning interactive and/or adaptable systems.
Theme 1 : TEL – Serious games
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) environments can enable new practices that increase engagement from learners. We are interested in online learning environments, especially ones based on play (Serious Games - SG), and collaborative ones. The approaches we develop aim to support learners' ability to progress at their own rhythm, exchange with peers to build shared understanding, and be engaged in the learning experience through play. Within this frame, we are exploring the follow problems : (1) Scripting learning activities, (2) Modeling and management of Awareness, (3) Monitoring and regulating collaborative activities.
Theme 2 : HCI
Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is an inter disciplinary field. Our work is grounded in methods coming from Computer Science, Experimental Psychology, Social Sciences and Design. With novel interactive devices now widespread in our environment, we must rethink design approaches originally developed for interacting with Desktop-PCs. We are focusing on how to orchestrate increasingly heterogeneous devices (wearables, watches, glasses, mobile devices, boards), and carry research on the following topics : (1) Design and prototyping methods, (2) Development Toolkits (3), Appropriation processes.
Theme 3 : Adaptation
Adapting systems to users is a key factor in improving accessibility, usability, usefulness and even acceptability. In this context, we are especially interested in dynamic system adaption to a changing context of use (i.e. users, devices, and environment), and extracting knowledge from traces collected from interaction between users and computer environment. Our work focuses on adaptation to people with disabilities and/or special needs to improve content accessibility, training and cognitive remediation based on adaptive serious games. We tackle the following challenges: (1) Modeling context of use, (2) Behavior analysis, (3) Deploying adaptive systems.
