An award-winning paper at the SIGCHI 2026 conference

The paper “How Interface Design Choices Lead to Indirect Environmental Impacts Through Use Intensification: An empirical evaluation of messaging apps”, written as part of a joint PhD with the University of Strasbourg, received a best paper honourable mention award.

The SIGCHI 2026 conference brought together more than 5,200 researchers in Human-Computer Interaction in Barcelona. The SICAL team was presenting two articles and a poster, while the Database team co-organized two workshops.

The article "How Interface Design Choices Lead to Indirect Environmental Impacts Through Use Intensification, An empirical evaluation of Messaging Apps" written as part of a joint PhD with the University of Strasbourg, received a best paper honourable mention award. This article studies how the design of user interfaces can lead to environmental harms. The article proposes a analysis method structured around feature analysis and interviews. The article contributes design heuristics and develops theoretical contributions, proposing four categories of indirect effects, leading to the expansion of digital infrastructures.
