Team TWEAK: Traces, Web, Education, Adaptation, Knowledge

The TWEAK team was created in January 2015. It was previoulsy part of the SILEX team, in the LIRIS lab.

The activity of the TWEAK team relates to the fields of symbolic Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Engineering (KE), exploring more specifically two dimensions: TELS (Technology Enhanced Learning Systems) and the Web. We are particularly interested in ability to explain the processes implemented by the systems we develop, and the co-evolution of user-machine systems in computer-supported environment, with a knowledge-oriented stance. We evaluate our proposals through prototypes and tools that we test in various domains, from MOOCs to the Web of things.

Our work in KE is about engineering the dynamics of knowledge, in which modeled traces are a representation of experience and an important source of knowledge. We propose the notion of Modeled-Trace Management System (MTMS), specified and implemented in an open platform. Those MTMSs, coupled with an instrumentation of the traced systems, put the user in a central position for the co-construction of knowledge. To this end, we are developing the paradigm of traced-experience based reasoning: an interactive and dynamic process where computations are transparent enough to let users adapt them to their needs. We also draw on cognitive and social sciences to sustain the reflexive use of activity traces.

Our work in the field of TELS aims at proposing models providing the various actors of a learning situations (authors of educational contents, teachers, learners) with tools to sustain learning. Our stance is that knowledge acquisition, from those various various, allows them to contribute to setting up a learning environment suited to everyone's need. In the context of a competency-based approach, we aim at assisting the teacher in creating learning activities, monitoring pupils, and setting up an adaptative teaching. Harnessing the traces of the interactions between the learner and the TELS also helps to sustain self-regulation, through the building of open skill-profiles, allowing at the same time the learner to set their goals, and the system to recommend personalized activities.

Our work on the Web recognizes that it has become the chosen medium of interaction between users and software applications. Furthermore, with the growing integration of the Web with the physical world through connected objects and robots, the boundary between digital activities and other kinds of activities has faded. We are adopting the vision of a Semantic Web, were knowledge can be elicited and shareable between humans and machines, thus allowing applications to adapt to the users' needs and context, and technology users to become informed and pro-active. This approach requires methods, tools and formalisms to efficiently reason on shared knowledge, as well as on open linked data available across the Web. In this context where technologies and practices are continuously evolving, we rely on established and emerging standards, which we contribute to develop and promote.
