Team SyCoSMA: Multi-Agents Systems

Coordinator : Frédéric ArmettaAssistant coordinator : Mathieu LefortTeam presentation document (PDF)

The Cognitive Systems and Multi-Agents Systems group's research focuses on the field of artificial intelligence (AI), proposing new computer models and solutions to support the evolution of current computer systems and anticipate that of future systems, in a context of data and knowledge massification, dynamics, large-scale distribution and algorithmic and systemic complexity. We consider these research objectives in two ways:

  • A fundamental articulation rooted in the field of cognitive science, looking at cognitive models that enable us to address the question of the intelligence and of the intelligibility of data and knowledge from the angle of the co-construction of meaning and representations in artificial systems. Our research in this field is part of a constructivist vision, considering representations as dynamic constructs that the computer system elaborates on the basis of its experience of interaction with its environment, and through learning mechanisms and self* mechanisms (self-organization, self-adaptation, self-development) that enable its autonomy.
  • An operational articulation oriented towards the computer engineering of socially intelligent systems, where the aim is to propose collective intelligence models, enabling cooperation and decentralized coordination of local behaviors (agent level) in order to obtain global behaviors (MAS level), making it possible to achieve a goal, with capacities for adaptation, evolution, self-organization and so on. Within this framework, we consider fields of study and application such as networks of interconnected objects found in intelligent environments (smart housing, smart cities, smart highways, etc.), robot networks, the social web, mixed or hybrid systems integrating humans and artifacts (agents, components, robots, etc.).

Research themes

  • Multi-Agent Learning: draws on the experience of team members in constructivist approaches to cognition, and on approaches to multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and Markov decision processes (MDP), to extend classical multi-agent learning techniques towards new techniques inspired by the constructivist current, such as MARLs doping with MCTS (Monte Carlo Tree Search) and developmental learning.
  • Self-* Systems and Autonomy: brings together work on self-* techniques and approaches for implementing endogenous control in decentralized systems for solving complex problems. In addition to these control mechanisms, we are interested in the development of participatory (self-regulating) methods combining multi-agent simulation and learning methods, for the elaboration of regulation policies or governance of complex socio-technical systems (e.g. (self-)-regulation of traffic on smart freeways, (self-)-regulation of energy consumption on SmartGrids, etc.).

For more information on these first two themes (projects, theses, etc.), see this web page.

  • Interaction and Coordination Models: enable groups of agents operating in a dynamic and distributed environment under resource-limiting constraints, to coordinate and make rational decisions to achieve their goals. We are involved in the main themes of assistance systems, including service robotics, dedicated to dependent people, with a strong focus on mechanism design, transport regulation and intelligent energy management.
