La recherche de Beagle concerne la biologie computationnelle et l'évolution artificielle (génétique numérique). Nous nous positionnons à l'interface entre l'informatique et les sciences du vivant afin de produire de nouvelles connaissances en biologie par le biais de la modélisation et la simulation. En d'autre termes, nous réalisons des artéfacts - du Latin artis factum (une entité créée par l'homme plutôt que par la nature) - et nous les explorons de façon à comprendre la nature. Notre recherche est donc basée sur une stratégie interdisciplinaire : nous développons des formalismes informatiques et des outils logiciels pour la modélisation de systèmes complexes en synergie avec différentes équipes de biologie avec lesquelles nous entretenons des liens étroits. Cette approche, relevant des "sciences numériques" (ou sciences computationnelles) nous permet d'étudier des abstractions de systèmes ou processus biologiques afin de mettre au jour les principes organisationnels des systèmes cellulaires dans une logique de biologie des systèmes.
