Subject Control of Computing Systems
Abstract My research project aims at investigating paradigms and techniques to build and control efficient, dependable and privacy-preserving computing systems. Ad-hoc service configuration require a high level of expertise which could benefit from automation in many ways. A control algorithm can handle bigger, more complex systems, even when they are extremely sensitive to variations in their environment. Moreover, the control theory provides by definition mathematical guarantees that its objectives will be fulfilled. However, applying control to computing systems poses several challenges. No physics governs the applications, and the specificity of such systems brings new considerations and requirements; that however enable to expand control theory. I will focus on two different applications: the protection of privacy of location-based services users while preserving the service; and the efficient and dependable management of cloud-based services. In my thesis, I will propose modelling and control algorithms for studied systems; and design, implement and validate the proposed solutions through experiments.
