Boxes and folios are usually used for the storage of ancient manuscripts, even though these manuscripts are highly deteriorated, the preservation of the documents is not taken into consideration when using such a storage method. Digitization or scanning that creates an image of the manuscript is used as an alternative to conservation on paper. An image is a static representation of the text and does not allow its processing as is, however indexing of documents requires research following the textual content. Manual research and indexing are tedious and time consuming, therefore there is a considerable need for an automated tool based on handwriting recognition in order to perform document indexing
