A constructive approach to Personal Data Physicalization.

There is a growing realization among the public, government, academia and industry that personal data, how it is collected and how it is used is a fundamental aspect of people’s daily life (e.g., [CIGI, 18]). However, there is a central problem of agency and power with personal data as it is currently exploited, that leaves individuals dispossessed. People generate increasing amounts of technology-mediated data that characterizes them for example through their actions, habits, relationships and activities. However, people have little awareness and control of their data and of how to access it, explore it, and leverage it.

We aim to tackle the challenge of establishing meaningful relationships between people and their data by combining the areas of personal visualization, design, and digital fabrication. We hypothesize that bringing digital data into the physical realm, therefore leveraging the rich multi-sensory properties of physical objects, can help people relate in intimate and reflective manners on their activities and experiences.
