www2012 : l’édition de tous les records

During one week, from April 16th to 20th, Lyon hosted the 21st World Wide Web conference, an edition that will remain historic. LIRIS was heavily involved in organizing this event.

All in all, 1,800 scientists, experts, professionals and users of 54 nationalities have met in the Convention Centre to attend the plenary sessions with Tim Berners Lee, Chris Welty, Neelie Kroes, Bernard Stiegler, Gilles Babinet, to listen to their visionary and enlightening presentations and for a most interesting round table on the issue "The Web, a human right ?".

The attendees have met and exchanged information during the 29 international workshops, 17 tutorials presented by international references, presentations of the 108 international communications, and during the sessions dedicated to Europe, developers, Web industry, the emergent Web Science, the international web symposium (W3C), the PhD's presentations, the posters and demonstrations.

A session of round tables has taken up the conferences' issues such as education, economy, accessibility, art and design, and digital humanities. The "Web For All" conference has attracted Web accessibility specialists (accessibility on and with the web). The Imaginove pole, as well as the Claroline and Paris Web communities have organized a "Global Media Connect" during the conference .

Web giants (Google, Microsoft) and local companies who build tomorrow's web have shared a common exposition space with the International Symposium of the University in the Digital Age and with the institutions - first of which Greater Lyon and Rhône-Alpes region, as well as the two most important French research Institutes INRIA and CNRS.

For the first time in the history of the www conference, Lyon has taken the initiative and proposed to all local actors (companies, users, associations etc) unofficial activities in French, open to all in the city. Almost 2,000 people thronged throughout the city to attend over 15 initiatives.

Next year, Rio de Janeiro will host www2013 and Seoul will organize www2014. The conference will be back in Europe in 3 years in Italy (Florence) for www2015.

Many economic actors and searchers from Lyon and its region have already booked these dates.

The 3000 challenge, a world first!

This 21st edition provided an opportunity to present a technical prowess as a world premiere performed specially for www2012 - the 3000 challenge!!! The Convention Centre of Lyon, SPIE Communications - responsible for the project - and Aruba Networks have raised the challenge of providing a high density and environment-friendly WiFi coverage in the 3,000 place Amphitheater. The challenge was successfully carried out.

Lyon as world web capital - today and tomorrow

With the conferences the rich unofficial program and all the digital sector actors' mobilization - companies, institutions, researchers etc - almost 4,000 people have met in Lyon, exchanged and capitalized their experience in order to build the future of the Web. In April, Lyon was indeed the World Web Capital.

Let's hope that every year from now on, Lyon will mobilize these enthusiastic actors and scientists, all united in the same dynamics and will assert its status of web capital.
