Summary:
The design of virtual landscapes represents a significant challenge in computer graphics, aiming to faithfully replicate our daily environment through detailed modeling of terrains, vegetation, urban centers, watercourses, and other complex interactive elements. The increasing demand for virtual world creation necessitates increasingly realistic models to provide optimal immersion for users, broaden exploration possibilities, and enhance overall experience.
This manuscript highlights various methods for modeling natural virtual scenes, exploring procedural generation and physical simulation approaches. The methods presented demonstrate modeling capabilities adapted to specific targeted applications. In this context, my research aims to design virtual landscapes that meet high standards of creativity, realism, diversity, and comprehensive representation of observed phenomena on our planet.
Several studies are presented on modeling diverse phenomena to enhance a landscape from an initial bare terrain. Firstly, a hierarchical modeling of large-scale river networks is discussed, achieving precision suitable for animating watercourses. Secondly, a method is proposed to enhance the realism of simulated ecosystems by introducing diversity among individuals, including comprehensive modeling of organisms' lifecycle from creation to decomposition in the scene. Additionally, an approach to modeling arid deserts is presented, highlighting the wind-driven mechanisms responsible for these formations, along with a method to simulate glacier evolution. Finally, I conclude by presenting a method to dynamically populate virtual scenes with objects, emphasizing interactions between them and emphasizing the level of user control for positioning these elements.
