Image indexing by parsimonious and monodimensional representations of singularities

With the increasing availability of digital images, efficient supervised image classification systems should be built. Most of these systems use textual information to index images. However, the use of pixel information to represent an image by a signature permits to improve classification results. Regarding the signature computation, the most efficient methods are local approaches computing local signatures around some salient points. From a mathematical point of view, an edge can be efficiently characterized by considering its Hölder exponents. As a consequence this mathematical notion has been used to design two new local descriptors allowing characterizing edges in the local neighbourhood of salient points. Once the image is described, the local representation is difficult to classify because the image is no longer considered as a vector. To overcome these disadvantages, three major solutions have been proposed. The first one consists in representing the image as a string of local signatures by adding an implicit order between salient points and then to compare them with classical string-based distances. The second solution is to represent the image by an histogram of local signatures. For this purpose we have proposed to use a self organizing map clustering algorithm. This representation is well suited to be processed by a machine learning classifier. Finally, we propose to represent an image by an histogram of substrings of local signatures obtained by following the edges in images. For this purpose, a self organizing map adapted to deal with structured data is used. This representation is shown well suited to be learnt by a support vector machine classifier
