Modeling and simulating complex natural scenes is a wide and important problem. Several very specific techniques and systems have been proposed for modeling landscapes and simulating some ecosystems. Unfortunately, the proposed models are so diverse that they cannot be unified in a common framework. Beautiful images can be produced. Unfortunately, the rendered models are often too perfect, which betrays the synthetic nature of the scene. Details such as fallen autumn leaves, lichens or mosses, cracks and fractures, shells in sand, rust and eroded stones on monuments, must be represented to increase reality.

The challenge is to handle the complexity and diversity of objects interacting together and with their environment, create an integrated and unified framework for modeling and simulating details in natural scenes.
