I obtained my Ph.D. in Theoretical Computer Science in 1997 at LIP lab of the ENS of Lyon. My initial research field was algorithmics on cellular automata. From 1994 to 1997, I studied the following problem: How to generate discrete circles in real time by cellular automata?
I was recruited at the University Lumière - Lyon 2 as a temporary Lecturer and then, in 1998, as a Lecturer. I was first member of ERIC laboratory, then of LIRIS laboratory from 2002. My research was then oriented towards discrete geometry. The goal was the robust description of shapes by using, or redefining, the appropriate tools in the field of discrete geometry. I studied the notions of discrete tangent, discrete curvature, polygonization, segmentation into discrete arcs, etc. In this context, I obtained a "Habilitation à diriger des recherches" (in 2004) and then a full professor position in 2006.
Afterwards, my activities were gradually oriented towards the automatic analysis of images and videos. I have led several projects within this context, including the ANR project ReVeS (Reconnaissance de Végétaux sur Smartphone) in which we have developed a semi-automatic segmentation algorithm applied to tree leaves in natural environment. This work was used into the Folia App (published freely on the Apple Store), which allowed to recognize trees and shrubs from images of their leaves.
Finally, I have been working in the field of deep learning applied to images for about 4 years. Thus, we have developed new networks for example to colorize old aerial images or to detect diseases on plants from multi-spectral imager.
