Christophe Garcia
Full Professor at Insa Lyon & LIRIS Laboratory (UMR 5205 CNRS)
Current position
I am Full Professor at the Institut National de Sciences Appliquées at Lyon, France (INSA Lyon), teaching computer science in the first cycle department (computer systems, databases, Algorithms); Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition in the IT departments.
Since July 2015, I am Deputy Director of the LIRIS Laboratory (Laboratoire d'InfoRmatique en Image et Systèmes d'information), a joint lab UMR 5205 CNRS / INSA de Lyon / Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 / Université Lumière Lyon 2 / École Centrale de Lyon.
Since Septembre 2016, I am Vice-President for Research in Information and Digital Society of INSA - Lyon.
Short Bio
Christophe Garcia received his PhD degree in computer vision from Université Claude Bernard Lyon I, France, in 1994 and his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from INSA Lyon / University of Lyon I, in 2009.
He has been involved in various computer vision research projects during his stay of two years at the IBM Vision Automation Group, France, and one year at the Computer Vision Center of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain.
As a fellow of the European Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM), he spent one year at the German National Research Center (now Fraunhofer Institute), working towards the development of autonomous and multi-agents robots.
From 1997 to 2002, he was a researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), Greece, and a visiting Professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete, where he has been involved in several advanced EU projects in the field of video and image analysis.
In 2003, he spent 10 months at IRISA-INRIA, Rennes, France, working in the field of automatic video structuring and indexing.
From 2003 to 2010, Pr. Garcia joined France Telecom R&D / Orange Labs, where he was a Fellow Expert Researcher in Pattern Recognition, Neural Networks and Image Indexing and manager of the Multimedia Content Analysis Technologies team.
Since 2010, he is Full Professor at INSA de Lyon. From 2011 to 2015, he has been head of the IMAGINE research team (18 permanent researchers + 30 PhD students) of the LIRIS laboratory. He is now Deputy Director of the LIRIS laboratory and Vice-President for Research in Information and Digital Society at Insa - Lyon.
His current technical and research activities are in the areas of ConvNets - deep learning (since 1999), neural networks, pattern recognition and computer vision.
He holds 17 industrial patents and has published more than 140 articles in international conferences and journals. He has served in more than 30 program committees of international conferences and is an active reviewers in 15 international journals where he has co-organized several special issues.
He has served as an associate editor of Int. Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation (Elsevier), Image and Video Processing (Hindawi) and Pattern Analysis and Application (Springer-Verlag).
He acts as an expert for European and national research agencies: evaluator and vice-chair of the FET-OPEN EC program Research and Innovation Actions) , evaluator for the FP6-7 EU programs, French ANR programs, National Research Council (NRC)Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF), Greek Ministry of Research (PRAXI et PENED).
